Atal Pension Yojana: Complete Guide, Benefits, and Eligibility

Atal Pension Yojana: Securing your financial future after retirement is incredibly important. To help people working in the unorganized sector, the Government of India launched a brilliant scheme called the Atal Pension Yojana (APY).

Here is everything you need to know about this scheme in very simple words.

What is Atal Pension Yojana?

The Atal Pension Yojana is a government-backed pension scheme aimed at providing financial security to workers in the unorganized sector (like maids, drivers, farmers, and shopkeepers).

Under this scheme, you make a small monthly contribution during your working years, and in return, the government gives you a guaranteed fixed monthly pension after you turn 60 years old.

Who can join this scheme? (Eligibility)

Joining the APY is very easy, but you must meet a few simple conditions:

Age Limit: You must be between 18 and 40 years old.

Bank Account: You must have a savings bank account linked with your Aadhaar card.

Tax Payers: Individuals who pay income tax are not allowed to join this scheme anymore. It is strictly for non-taxpayers.

How much pension will you get?

The scheme allows you to choose your monthly pension amount based on your future needs. You can choose from five fixed options:

  • ₹1,000 per month
  • ₹2,000 per month
  • ₹3,000 per month
  • ₹4,000 per month
  • ₹5,000 per month

The amount of money you need to pay every month depends on two things: the pension amount you choose and the age at which you join the scheme. If you join early (at age 18), your monthly payment will be very low. If you join late (at age 40), your monthly payment will be higher.

Family Security: If the subscriber passes away, the same pension amount is given to their spouse (husband or wife).

Return of Corpus: If both the subscriber and the spouse pass away, the total accumulated money is safely handed over to the nominee.

Automatic Debit: The monthly contribution is automatically deducted from your bank account, so you don’t have to worry about missing payments.
