PM Fasal Bima Yojana: Check Premium Rates, New Updates, and How to Apply

PM Fasal Bima Yojana Latest Updates: The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) continues to serve as a crucial financial safety net for millions of farmers across India. Designed to protect farmers against unseasonal rain, floods, drought, and pest attacks, the scheme ensures that agricultural losses do not lead to severe financial distress.

Recent updates and technology upgrades have made the enrollment and claim settlement processes faster and more transparent. Here is a complete guide to the latest developments under PMFBY.

Enrollment Updates and Deadlines

While the nationwide enrollment deadline for the Kharif season generally falls on July 31, several state governments have extended deadlines to assist farmers affected by monsoon delays and extreme weather events. For instance, states facing heavy rainfall or flood conditions have extended registration windows up to mid-August to allow maximum coverage.

Farmers growing notified crops like paddy, maize, cotton, and pulses are urged to complete their registration early via the official PMFBY portal, local Common Service Centres (CSCs), or bank branches.

Low Premium Rates for Maximum Coverage

One of the biggest strengths of PMFBY is its extremely subsidized premium structure. The government bears the major portion of the insurance cost so that farmers only pay a minimal fraction:

  • Kharif Crops: Farmers pay just 2% of the sum insured.
  • Rabi Crops: Farmers pay only 1.5% of the sum insured.
  • Commercial & Horticultural Crops: Fixed at 5% of the sum insured.
  • The remaining premium amount is jointly subsidized by the Central and State Governments.

Faster Claims Settlement Using Modern Technology

To reduce delays in claim payments, the government has integrated advanced technology into crop damage assessment. Tools like YES-TECH (AI-assisted satellite imaging) and WINDS (automatic weather stations) are now actively used to measure yield losses accurately.

Additionally, insurance companies are required to settle claims via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly into the farmer’s Aadhaar-linked bank account within stipulated timeframes to prevent unnecessary delays.

Strict 72-Hour Rule for Reporting Crop Losses

In cases of localized natural disasters—such as hailstorms, land inundation, or landslides—farmers must report their individual crop damage within 72 hours of the incident.

Farmers can log their damage claims immediately through:

  • The official Crop Insurance App or pmfby.gov.in portal.
  • The toll-free Krishi Rakshak helpline (14447).
  • Reporting directly to their local bank branch or Common Service Centre (CSC).

How Farmers Can Apply

Registration under PMFBY is completely voluntary for all farmers, including both loanee (Kisan Credit Card holders) and non-loanee farmers.

To register online, farmers can visit pmfby.gov.in, enter their mobile number linked with Aadhaar, upload land details (Khasra/Khatauni number), and pay their small premium share using UPI or net banking. Alternatively, farmers can apply offline by submitting their documents at any CSC or bank branch.
